A peculiar-looking succulent hoodia can reach 1 m (3 ft). It bears several grey-green, spiky stems, and pale purple blooms.
When traveling through the desert, the San people of the Kalahari have historically used this herb to numb their hunger and thirst pangs. This practice was first noted in 1937.
Hoodia, a plant originally from the Kalahari desert, is now widely grown in Namibia and South Africa. The plant is propagated through cuttings or seeds. Due to the hoodia plant's threatened survival in the wild, trade in it is prohibited by law.
