hypothyroidism (AKA Hashimoto’s disease)

Hypothyroidism is low levels of thyroid hormones. The main cause is an autoimmune disease, but it can also be caused by damage to the pituitary gland. If left untreated, it can progress to myxedema coma - a severe form of hypothyroidism. Myxedema coma can be life-threatening and cause bradycardia and hypotension to the extent of cardiovascular collapse.

Symptoms

    Fatigue
    Weight gain
    slow metabolism
    cold intolerance
    dry skin
    dry hair
    bradycardia
    cardiomegaly
    high cholesterol
    atherosclerosis
    menorrhagia
    goiter
    Depression

What To Expect

Mild symptoms such as dry skin and dry hair, constipation, and cold intolerance to myxedema coma (ex. decreased level of consciousness, lethargy, hypoventilation, etc.).

Made Worse By

Non-adherence to medication schedule.

How Common

Most common in females between 30-60 years old but can affect both genders.

Diagnosed By

Serum thyroid-stimulating hormone, serum free T4, serum T3 and T4, thyroid antibodies, radioactive iodine uptake, biopsy, ultrasonography.

Caution Do not stop antithyroid medications abruptly because it can lead to hypothyroidism and possible myxedema coma.
