Hypothyroidism is low levels of thyroid hormones. The main cause is an autoimmune disease, but it can also be caused by damage to the pituitary gland. If left untreated, it can progress to myxedema coma - a severe form of hypothyroidism. Myxedema coma can be life-threatening and cause bradycardia and hypotension to the extent of cardiovascular collapse.
Mild symptoms such as dry skin and dry hair, constipation, and cold intolerance to myxedema coma (ex. decreased level of consciousness, lethargy, hypoventilation, etc.).
Non-adherence to medication schedule.
Most common in females between 30-60 years old but can affect both genders.
Serum thyroid-stimulating hormone, serum free T4, serum T3 and T4, thyroid antibodies, radioactive iodine uptake, biopsy, ultrasonography.
Caution Do not stop antithyroid medications abruptly because it can lead to hypothyroidism and possible myxedema coma.
