Stress or Convalescence

When external stimuli cause mental and physical tension, this is called stress. If it has a permanent effect on us, it can make us sick. Before you start, however, you should first find out what stress means to you personally - in other words, what stress triggers you to lose your cool. This is the only way you can act against stress in the appropriate situation. Examples of frequent stress factors are constant availability via cell phone and other communication channels, double burden of family and job or deadline pressure.

What To Expect

Stress is a natural physical reaction to psychological or physical strain. It serves to increase the willingness to perform in assumed or real dangerous situations. Stress leads to symptoms such as palpitations, sweating and shaky hands. In terms of developmental biology, this has the purpose of making more energy available at short notice in dangerous situations. Isolated stress situations are not harmful to health. Permanent stress, however, has negative effects on almost all organ systems.

Made Worse By

Stress factors change when society changes: In the past, stress triggers such as cold, hunger or injuries played a major role. Today, it is mainly the psychosocial causes of stress that make people irritable, hectic and nervous. Typical stressors of our modern society are: Pressure to perform and deadline pressure, multitasking, conflicts at school, at work or in the family, double burden of work and family, serious illness or death in the family, permanent availability due to digitalization, an overly demanding attitude towards oneself, dissatisfaction, worries and fears about the future, unhealthy nutrition, lack of exercise, little or no recovery.

How Common

Almost a quarter of the population, 23 percent, even states that they are frequently stressed. However, 40 percent of the population rarely or never feel stressed.

Diagnosed By

A self-diagnosis is often sufficient. After a great strain, the body notices how much it suffers from stress. The feeling of constant exhaustion and tiredness often indicates a high level of stress.
