Anemia

From a medical point of view, the main feature of anaemia is a decreased hemoglobins concentration in the blood. When suffering from anaemia, there is too little hemoglobins, so that the body cells can no longer be supplied with sufficient oxygen. There are several possible causes for anemia. It can be congenital due to certain genetic defects and can lead to life-threatening complications even in infancy. In other cases, anemia is acquired only in the course of life, for example through poor, unbalanced nutrition. It is often also a secondary finding of chronic diseases. In addition, anaemia can occur more frequently in old age due to slower regeneration processes.

Symptoms

    Fatigue
    Weakness
    Yellow skin
    Pale skin
    Irregular heartbeats
    Difficulty Breathing
    Shortness of breath
    Dizziness
    Lightheadedness
    Chest Pain
    Headache
    Cold hands and feet

What To Expect

Signs of anaemia can be paleness, reduced performance, lack of concentration and an increased susceptibility to infection. Anaemia due to iron deficiency can lead to brittle nails and inflamed corners of the mouth and mucous membranes.

Made Worse By

Anaemia can be worsened by various factors. For example, too little iron in the blood can cause and worsen the anemia. Blood loss, often due to bleeding in the stomach or intestines or during heavy menstruation, can also make the condition significantly worse. Chronic inflammation can reduce iron utilisation and blood formation, which in fact stimulates anaemia.

How Common

There are various forms of anemia, with iron deficiency anemia being by far the most common. More than 2 billion people worldwide are affected.

Diagnosed By

Many patients only find out that they suffer from anaemia during a routine blood test or other examinations. Anyone suspected of suffering from anemia should always have it checked by a doctor. This is especially true if other diseases such as diabetes or heart disease already exist. Anemia can weaken the patient even more. If symptoms such as blood in the stool or urine occur, or if one notices blood in vomit, then a visit to a doctor is urgently recommended. Anemia can be diagnosed by a very simple blood test.

Caution Seek professional advice to determine the type of anaemia you have before home treatment.
