Wax Gourd

Benincasa hispida

The annual climber Wax Gourd features hairy leaves with three lobes, tendrils, and big yellow flowers. It yields elongated gourds and is around 40 cm (16 in) long.

For thousands of years, people have consumed and used wax gourds as medicine. The Tang Materia Medica, which was compiled in 659 CE, is where it was first mentioned.

This herb originates in tropical Asia and Africa and is grown as a vegetable in China and India. In the late summer, the fruit is harvested.
