Tea tree

Melaleuca alternifolia

This herb is known for its strong antiseptic properties. The tea tree essential oil is also helpful when treating infections, stings, and burns. As the name suggests, this herb is found on the tea tree, an evergreen tree that is comprised of pointed leaves and spikes that have white flowers. Since the leaves are most potent, they are the only part that is used from the tree. The leaves can be used fresh or dried. The herb is used by the Aborigines and is native to Australia. Whether using the herb or the essential oil, it can be used to help skin problems, coughs, colds, gum disease, chronic conditions, warts and acne. This herb can be found in a number of different hygiene and skin products, helping to promote healing from infections and unwanted bacteria. The herb is poisonous so it should not be consumed internally and is unsafe to use on children. It should not be used on animals because it can result in toxicity and death. It can be applied to the mouth area as long as it is not ingested.
