Marigold

Calendula officinalis

The herb calendula is commonly known as marigold. Its bright orange petals are easy to recognize and are known to cheer up any room or dull space. While this flower is cheery, it also is known to be an effective herb that has many healing properties. It is a great option for skin that is inflamed or preventing infections. Marigold can be cleansing and promotes healing and repair. The flowers can be used fresh, dried, or as an essential oil. It can be applied topically on the skin with a cream, ointment, or carrier oil. When used as an infusion or as a tincture, it can be used to treat chronic infections on the skin such as diaper rash, athlete’s foot, sore breasts, and bug bites.

This flower is native to Europe, specifically the southern region. Marigold does well in almost all soil types but it is best grown in temperate areas. It is easy to grow from its seeds, making it a great option for those beginning to grow their own herbs. Flowers are usually harvested in the early summer. After they are harvested, they are stored in a shaded place to dry.
