An evergreen tree with yellowish-white blooms and dark green foliage, the kola nut may reach a height of 20 meters (65 feet). 5–10 white or red seeds (nuts) are contained in large, woody seed pods.
Kola nuts have been a staple of western and central Africa for thousands of years. They are chewed for their digestive, tonic, and aphrodisiac effects. Today, kola nuts are used extensively to flavor soft drinks.
The kola nut is abundantly grown in the tropics, particularly in Nigeria, Brazil, and the West Indies. It comes originally from West Africa. When mature, the seeds are collected and sun-dried.
