Gou Teng

Uncaria rhynchophylla

Gou Teng is a perennial climber with a height of 10 m (33 ft). It contains composite flower heads, thorns, and opposite lance-shaped leaves.

The Miscellaneous Records, which date from around 500 CE, contain the earliest known usage of gou teng in Chinese medicine.

Gou Teng is grown in China's southern and eastern regions; it is indigenous to China and South-East Asia. In the fall and winter, the stems and thorns are harvested.
