Dill

Anethum graveolens

Dill is classified as an annual plant that typically grows up to 30 inches. The stem is hollow and breaks off into feather-like leaves with yellow flowers. The dill fruit has a very strong scent.

Ancient Egyptians used dill in a pain-killing remedy that was documented in the Ebers papyrus. Dill was also believed to have been used by the ancient Greeks to help them fall asleep by covering their eyes with the leaves.

Dill can grow in big, open areas and is a popular crop in Germany, England and North America. The plant is native in parts of Asia and Europe. Dill leaves are often used as a culinary ingredient and the seeds are picked during the end of summer.
