Codonopsis pilosula

Codonopsis is a perennial that can reach a height of 1.5 m (5 ft). It has oval-shaped leaves and blooms singly in the summer with bell-shaped flowers with purple patterns.

In Chinese herbal medicine, codonopsis has a place as a moderate tonic that boosts vitality, enhances physical and mental health, and supports the effects of ginseng. It is used interchangeably with ginseng in Chinese herbal formulations and prescribed to people who feel it is too potent of a tonic.II

Codonopsis is a plant indigenous to northeastern China and is common throughout the region, particularly in the provinces of Shanxi and Szechuan. In the spring or the fall, it is multiplied from seed. The root is taken once the aerial components have died down in the autumn.
