John Gerard, an herbalist in the 16th century wrote about several benefits of taking borage in the form of a syrup. He wrote that it was a comforting remedy for sadness, anxiety, and heart issues. It has been shown to also help with respiratory problems.

Borage is native to Morocco and Southern Spain. Though it is a weed that grows all over the Mediterranean, it is grown and harvested to be used for seed oil and a garden herb.
