Ammoniacum is a tall perennial herb with intricate leaves, a sturdy stem, and white flower umbels that grow up to 3 meters (10 ft).
Since ancient times, ammoniacum has been recognized for its therapeutic properties; Hippocartes (460-377 BCE) makes reference to it. The popular name of the herb is said to have come from the Temple of Jupiter Ammon in Libya, where it was widely harvested.
Ammoniacum is a milky gum from northern Russia, Iran, and central Asia. The gum is extracted from the pierced stem and formed into blocks or powder.
